Design and produce a laser cutting file

Brainstorming and some steps I need to complete

I started with a mind map to sort out the steps and processes I needed to complete. This is convenient for me to prepare tools and compare the steps to avoid omissions. Through combing, I feel more interested and challenging in THE 3D part. My project of choice is the protective case for my Air Pods. I really need a case like this and it's just the right size to fit in a bag.

Sketch

I designed 10 sketches as concept art. This included my design direction and the final solution I decided on was the square protective shell. The next step is to measure. The three dimensions I need to pay special attention to are the size of the charging cable that can be plugged in, the size of the AirPods indicator and the size of the gap that helps open the case. Finally, I also need to design the text and logo engraved on the shell.

Whether the experimental scheme is feasible

Make an unfolding plan out of wood and put it together to see if it works. By making the expansion map, we can understand the 2D expansion map of the product where we need vector cutting and where we need engraving so as to make the cutting map file better in the next step.

Vector drawing of the final design

Making the final vector was harder than I thought. I made 10+ changes to the drawing. This was a big challenge for me as it was the first time to make cut vector drawings. There are a lot of things I have to think about like how my grooves match up with the bumps. Like whether the thickness is the same as the height of the bump. Through so many times of constantly changing the drawing, I realized that many details of the design need to be considered, which requires me to have a lot of space imagination.
